Havelock Island Travel Guide

Havelock Island: A Tropical Paradise of Serenity and Adventure

A personal look at the beaches, experiences and little moments that make Havelock Island one of the most memorable places to visit in the Andaman Islands.

My Havelock Experience

The Island Feels Different From the Moment You Arrive

Havelock Island, now known as Swaraj Dweep, has a way of making you slow down. The roads are surrounded by greenery, the sea keeps appearing between the trees and the atmosphere feels completely different from a busy city holiday.

What makes Havelock special is that you don't have to choose between relaxing and having an adventure. One part of the day can be spent barefoot on a quiet beach, while the next can take you into the water for snorkelling, scuba diving or another island experience.

I think that is what stays with you after leaving Havelock. It isn't just one beach or one activity. It is the combination of beautiful coastline, tropical surroundings and those small moments when you realise you don't want to rush to the next place.

If you are visiting the Andaman Islands for the first time, give Havelock enough time. The island is much better experienced slowly than rushed through as a sightseeing stop.

The Beach I Wouldn't Rush

Radhanagar Beach

Radhanagar was one of those places where I stopped checking the time. The wide stretch of sand, clear water and greenery around the beach make it easy to understand why it is such an important part of a Havelock trip.

I wouldn't make this a quick photo stop. Walk along the beach, spend some time by the water and stay long enough to see how different the beach feels as the light changes towards evening.

My take Give Radhanagar a proper part of your day. It is much better when you are not watching the clock.
A Quieter Side of Havelock

Kalapathar Beach

Kalapathar felt different from Radhanagar. It was quieter, more relaxed and had its own character. The bright turquoise water, white sand and tropical greenery make the coastline especially beautiful.

I liked coming here when I wanted a slower part of the day. There is no need to rush around β€” just walk along the beach, take a few photographs and enjoy the view.

My take Keep Kalapathar for a relaxed stop. The beach is particularly nice when you have time to simply enjoy the surroundings.

When Havelock Gets Adventurous

Elephant Beach

Elephant Beach is where the relaxed side of Havelock turns into something much more energetic. The boat ride itself feels like the beginning of the experience, and once you reach the beach, the water becomes the centre of everything.

This is the place I would keep for a day when you actually want to get into the water. Depending on what you choose, you can try snorkelling, Jet Ski, parasailing, Sea Walk and other water experiences.

My take Don't try to squeeze Elephant Beach between too many other plans. Give yourself enough time to enjoy the beach and the activities without constantly checking the time.

The Island Beneath the Surface

The Moment I Saw Havelock Underwater

Havelock looks beautiful from the beach, but seeing it underwater is a completely different experience. The moment you go below the surface, the colours, coral and marine life make the island feel like an entirely different world.

Even if you have never tried scuba diving before, this is one of the experiences worth considering during a Havelock trip. The island has beginner-friendly diving options, and Discover De Andaman offers introductory dives with certified instructors.

What makes the experience special is that you are not simply looking at the sea anymore. You are actually moving through it, surrounded by coral and marine life.

You Don't Have To Be A Diver

Explore Havelock Beneath the Surface

Not everyone wants to try scuba diving, and that's completely fine. Snorkelling is an easier way to get a glimpse of the underwater world around Havelock without spending a long time underwater.

Floating above the clear water and looking down at the reef and marine life is surprisingly enjoyable. It is also something you can combine with a relaxed beach day rather than making the entire day about an activity.

For me, that's what makes snorkelling such a good option in Havelock. You get to experience the sea without needing to be an experienced swimmer or diver.

My take If scuba diving feels like too much, start with snorkelling. It is a simple way to experience the underwater side of Havelock.

The Part I Remember Most

A Slow Evening on Havelock

Not every memorable moment on Havelock needs an activity. Some of my favourite moments were simply the quiet ones β€” sitting near the sea, watching the light change and having nowhere else I needed to be.

After a day of travelling around the island, that slower pace feels especially good. You realise that you don't have to fill every hour of your holiday.

Sometimes the best part of Havelock is having nowhere to go for a while.
My Havelock List

What I Actually Enjoyed Doing in Havelock

You don't need to pack every hour with activities. These are the experiences that made the island feel worth slowing down for.

01

Watch the Sunset

Find a good spot near the beach and simply stay until the light starts changing. It is one of the easiest things to enjoy on the island.

02

Go Underwater

Try scuba diving or snorkelling and see the colourful underwater side of Havelock for yourself.

03

Explore the Beaches

Don't visit just one beach. Radhanagar and Kalapathar each give you a different feeling of the island.

04

Leave Some Time Empty

This might be the best advice I can give. Havelock is much more enjoyable when you don't rush from one place to another.

Plan Your Trip

When Is the Best Time to Visit Havelock?

The time of year can change the feel of your island experience. If beaches, water activities and outdoor experiences are your priority, planning your dates carefully is worth it.

October – February

Cooler Island Weather

This is a popular period for visiting the Andaman Islands. It is a good time to plan beach days, sightseeing and outdoor experiences around Havelock.

March – May

Warm & Tropical

The weather becomes warmer, but the island still offers plenty to enjoy. Plan outdoor activities earlier in the day and leave some relaxed beach time for later.

June – September

Monsoon Period

Rain and changing sea conditions can affect outdoor plans and water activities. If you travel during this period, keep your itinerary flexible.

My advice Don't plan Havelock so tightly that one change in weather ruins the day. Leave some flexibility in your itinerary β€” island travel is much more enjoyable that way.

Planning Your Stay

How Many Days Do You Really Need in Havelock?

Havelock can be visited as part of a larger Andaman itinerary, but giving the island enough time makes the experience much more relaxed.

OPTION 01

2 Days

Good if you are short on time and want to experience the highlights.

  • Radhanagar Beach
  • One water experience
  • Time to explore the island
OPTION 02

3 Days

A more comfortable option if you want a mixture of beaches, activities and relaxed time.

  • Radhanagar
  • Kalapathar

  • Scuba or snorkelling
OPTION 03

4+ Days

Ideal if you don't want to rush and want more freedom in your itinerary.

My choice If Havelock is an important part of your Andaman trip, I would rather spend three relaxed days here than try to see everything in one rushed day.
